Uppgift
A) Define cooperativity in the context of hemoglobin and myoglobin.
B) Give an example where cooperativity is beneficial and explain how it is beneficial. (4p) Max 100 words. Answer in English.
Answer
A) Coopertivity means that once one hemegroup in hemoglobin binds to one oxygen molecule, it makes it easier to other oxygen molecules to bind in to the other hemegroups in the same hemoglobin molecule. Even when one oxygen molecule gets released from heme, it fascilitates for other oxygen molecules to get released.
B) In hemoglobin there are 4 hememolecules, and each one of them can bind to one oxygen. In the lungs, the partial pressure of oxygen is high, which encourage hemoglobin to bind to oxygen. Coopevtivity here is benificial because it makes the oxygen transport in the body effective.
